New lighting at the Dome
Wednesday, 17 October 2007

A new multi-million lighting system is set to provide more stability for the contentious playing surface at the AFL's indoor showcase Telstra Dome.

The stadium will import the latest "artificial lighting" infrastructure for turf management from Holland and the rigs are expected to be in operation before the start of next season.

Telstra Dome boss Ian Collins said it was expected the $A2.2 million technology would produce a high quality playing surface year round.

The lighting system is used at famous grounds in Europe such as PSV Eindhoven and has been installed by British Premier League clubs Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham.

Collins said he hoped the lighting would be another step in improving Telstra Dome as a venue for football.

"I have been around too long to say that this will be a panacea but it is a very exciting development for us and one that Australian sports fans will be particularly interested in," Collins said.
